Hej! Jag har erhållit och sträckläst din bok! Mycket intressant och välskriven. Imponerad av ditt forskningsarbete som måste ha tagit mycket tid. Intressant att se korrespondensen med de svenska myndigheterna under trettiotalet. Som svensk får man skämmas. Tyvärr ser det ut som man nu vill stänga landet igen. Även intressant att läsa om alla dina släktingars öden, och inte minst breven mellan Martin och Hedvig, passionerade och fulla av längtan. Tack för mycket stimulerande läsning. Om du ska hålla föredrag i Göteborg vill jag gärna bli varslad/ Torbjörn H

Hej, Just läst "Till Sverige" [den nya uppdaterade och engelska upplagan]. En viktig bok. Din epilog och kapitlen om vad svenskarna visste är helt centrala. I min bok ”I tidens skugga” har jag ju ett kapitel om ”Judar och karolioner” där jag mest skriver om släkten Hirsch. Eftersom den förste kom till Sverige 1793 och det dröjde till 1865 innan Sverige tillät judaratt gifrta sig men icke-judar var de flesta av de släkter som fanns släkter med varandra. Din släkt har dock inga band till min. En viktig släkting, Oscar Hirsch, hade ju samma namn som din släkting. Det var dystert att den mosaiska församlingen motsatte sig en hel del judisk invandring, eftertsom man menade att det skulle sänka de etablerade judarnas anseende. Du nämner ju Staffan Thorsell en del. Han och hans fru Solveig var hos oss - här på Fårö - på lunch nyligen. Jag skriver ju åtskilligt om honom i min bok. Vänliga hälsningar Olle Wästberg

Dear Bertil, BRAVO! What an achievement. I am impressed beyond words over what you have compiled about the family's history and its broad implications. It is a text that deserves to be widely read and studied. To be sure, I have not read all 461 pages, but I have read selected sections and chapters and find your story compelling. And the English is extremely good. I wouldn't change a syllable. With your permission, I would like to forward the text to my children and grandchildren, who would keep a copy on their computer files. This is information the Wertheimer-Oppenheimer-Hirsch family members need to have at hand. I am embarrassed that I have not taken the saga of our branch of the family as a historical project as you have done. I will make quiet inquiries to see where this book might attract a publisher. I will let you know if I find promising leads. (My effort to find a translator was an abysmal failure.) Thanks for everything you are doing to keep memory of these horrible events alive and to document the truth. You should win a prize. Have you talked to the Nobel people yet? Lieber Herr Oppenheimer, herzlichen Dank für das Manuskript. Ich habe es aus Zeitgründen nur überflogen, aber auch so wird schon deutlich, dass Ihr Buch sehr gehaltvoll und die Geschichte Ihrer Familie sehr vielschichtig ist. Zudem geht Ihre Darstellung ja über die enge biografische Beschreibung hinaus. Ich könnte mir gut vorstellen, dass ein Verlag daran Interesse hat. Hallo Bertil, ich wollte mich schon längst nochmal melden und mich bedanken. Ich habe noch eine Nachbesprechung mit meiner Klasse gestern abgewartet. Die Schüler fanden die Veranstaltung sehr gut! Wir haben nochmals über ein paar Aspekte deiner Familienbiographie gesprochen und ein paar Folien deiner PowerPoint angeschaut dazu. Vielen vielen Dank, dass du bei uns warst! Es war sehr lehrreich für meine Schüler. Der Schüler, der dich danach noch angesprochen hatte (Giovanni), meinte, dass man durch deinen Vortrag das ganze allgemeine Geschichtliche gut an wahren Menschen nachvollziehen konnte. Es war ein Erfolg! Ich hoffe du findest die Zeit zum reflektieren die nächsten Wochen. Das war sicher eine sehr anstrengende Woche für euch. Das glaube ich dir. Es freut und ehrt mich sehr, dass ich ein Teil der Stolpersteinverlegungen für deine Familie sein durfte. Liebe Grüße Philipp

A very impressive true story that deserves to be told. This book is a victory in more ways than one. First of all, on the silence that resulted from the trauma suffered by the survivors of the Shoah. But it is certainly also a victory over the extermination ideology of the National Socialists. It was the intention of Hitler and his cronies to wipe Jews, Roma and Sinti and political opponents off the face of the earth and to make their memory disappear forever. This book is proof that this endeavor failed. Bertil Oppenheimer has reconstructed his parents’ story through a tenacious and in-depth research of archives in several countries. The result is a scientifically sound reconstruction of how his parents survived the Nazi persecution. The author rightly expresses concern about current developments in the world. It is hoped that the power of the reasonable word, of reason and of humanity will prevail over extreme currents and the ideology of violence. This book is a plea for humanity and an indictment of extremism. I wish it the many readers it deserves.
